CLASSICAL COMICS SCOOP SILVER IPPY WITH THEIR FIRST BOOK

The all-British graphic novel Henry V, has been awarded a Silver Medal at the 2008 Independent Publishers Awards (the “IPPYs”) in America.

This year’s contest attracted a total of 3,175 entries and saw the Original Text Henry V, which was released in November 2007, win runner-up in the Graphic Novel/Drawn Book- Drama/Documentary category.

“The quality of this year's entries has been totally amazing” – Independent Publisher

Chairman of Classical Comics, Clive Bryant said, “We are absolutely delighted to win this award with our first book. To see this dream become a reality, and then to gain recognition for our books has been a truly emotional experience. In fact, we’ve had such a positive response to both Henry V and Macbeth that we’ve increased the number of titles in production”.

Classical Comics’ pioneering multiple text versions of well-loved literature have proven to be a success around the globe, particularly with students and teachers, who welcome this vibrant, colourful way of introducing the classics.

Two further adaptations, Frankenstein and Jane Eyre, are due to be published in September this year; with another five titles being released between October 2008 and January 2009.

SURROGATES MOVIE ANNOUNCES MORE CAST

Ving Rhames, Radha Mitchell, and Rosamund Pike have joined Bruce Willis in the sci-fi thriller "The Surrogates" for Disney.

Jonathan Mostow is directing the film based on the graphic novel by Robert
Venditti and artist Brett Weldele for Top Shelf Productions. Michael Ferris
and John Brancato -- the writing duo that last teamed with Mostow on
"Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" -- penned the script. Mandeville
Film's David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman are producing along with Max Handelman and Elizabeth Banks.

Ned Vaughn ("Frost/Nixon") was also previously cast in the film, which is
set in the future where humans live risk-free lives through robot
surrogates that are eternally young, perfect-looking versions of themselves.

Rhames plays a charismatic cult figure who disdains the use of surrogates
and tries to lead an uprising against the "new world order."

Mitchell plays the professional partner of Willis' character, a cop that through his surrogate investigates the murders of others' surrogates. Pike plays his wife.

Production is set to begin in late April on the film, which will be
released through Touchstone. To buy the original Graphic novel go to: www.smallzone.co.uk/topshelf.htm

PICK OF THE MONTH:

TITLE: IRAQ: OPERATION CORPORATE TAKEOVER

Publisher: Boychild Productions, Creators: Sean Michael Wilson & Lee O'Connor

Format: A5 Perfect Bound b/w interiors, Pages: 80

Boychild Productions has made a graphic novel with the well respected UK charity War On Want to make an 80 page book focusing on the role of corporations like Halliburton and Bechtel in present day Iraq.

The book portrays, from a grass roots level, how these corporations are operating for profit, not people. Roughly in the vein of Joe Sacco's 'Palestine', written by Sean Michael Wilson, illustrated by Lee O'Connor, and based on the extensive research carried out by War on Want.

In addition Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) are making a killing in Iraq, while remaining unaccountable for countless human rights abuses and deaths by mercenary soldiers. The comic paints the picture of one young Iraqi man’s efforts to understand and cope with this new reality – and do something about it!
